There are various scientific studies showing the benefits of beets for the brain. Learn about the connection between beetroot and brain health.

Beetroots (or simply beets) are a superfood that provides various health benefits, particularly when it comes to your circulation. Various studies point to the benefits of drinking beet juice that happen as a result of its high nitrate content.

By enhancing circulation, beets can benefit many areas of the body – including the brain. Keep reading to learn about different studies that show how beets can benefit your brain health.

Beets and Elderly Adults

Beetroot and Brain HealthAccording to a 2011 study from Wake Forest University, dietary nitrates may increase cerebral blood flow (CBF)  in adults aged 66 to 81. Participants were divided into two groups: a high-nitrate diet group and a low-nitrate diet group.

Their results show that CBF increased by nearly 250% in the high-nitrate diet group while the low-nitrate diet group experienced a slight drop in blood flow. Furthermore, researchers found that CBF increased only in the brain areas associated with executive functioning such as problem-solving, working memory, and focused attention.

Beets and Cerebral Blood Flow

In a study published in the October 1, 2015 edition of the Journal of Physiology & Behavior, researchers explored the impact of dietary nitrates on cognitive performance. Participants drank either beetroot juice or a placebo and were asked to perform cognitive tasks after a 90-minute interlude.

The results show that those who drank beet juice experienced increased CBF as the cognitive tests began. However, they note that CBF decreased as the tasks became more manageable through the repetitions.

Beets and Young and Older Adults

A double-blind, crossover study by Massey University examined the impact of beet juice nitrates on brain function. Participants included 13 young adults and 11 older adults, with each consuming beetroot juice with either 10.5 mmol nitrates or a placebo with 1 mmol nitrate.

After 2.5 hours, all participants were told to walk on treadmills for 30 minutes and subsequently undergo cognitive performance tests. The results show that those who drank beet juice had lower blood pressure and better test performances, regardless of age.
